Year 7 project based learning week is all about exploring the fascinating world of science. Students have the choice of five projects; each project investigates a different aspect of how science impacts their lives and the world around them. The students participate in activities in school and go on a trip linked with their chosen theme. The five projects are as follows:
For those fascinated by animals and the great outdoors. This project will make sense of the burning questions… Why are there so many animal species? Where do all the animals live? What are animals made of? What and how do they eat? In this project there are lots of fun and interesting activities to learn about ecology; the students will study and care for living crayfish, get messy recreating the digestive system, extract DNA from strawberries, renovate a 20-room bug hotel, look at the bacteria their hands are home to, build a biosphere, have a competition to build the strongest birds nest, examine different bird beaks, take a trip to Wildwood Wildlife Park to get up close to the animals, plus lots more!
Robots are becoming increasingly sophisticated and lifelike. They are being used more and more in every day life, from vacuum cleaners to building cars; in this project students will think about how humans will be using robots in their lifetime. This project is for students who want to learn more about robots, the latest robotic technology and how close we are to artificial intelligence. During the week students will learn new skills in computer programming and electronics to build their own robotic hand with a view to constructing a fully working robot for our school. The trip to the Science Museum in London, allows students to investigate the history and future of robotics and technology.
This is the project for budding photographers looking to improve their skills or for students who know nothing about photography but would like to start. Students will learn about composition, the use of light, perspective, focus and the physics behind how cameras work. The trip is to Rochester where they will have the opportunity to photograph the Tudor architecture, the river, the cathedral and the views from the castle. This will allow them to put their phenomenal new skills into practice before they learn how to use Photoshop to add the finishing touches to their photos.
Chemistry surrounds us, from simply cooking dinner to volcanic eruptions. This is the project for students who are captivated by the world of bubbles, bangs and burning. The students will find out about the science behind what goes on in the kitchen, including making bread, butter, fizzy drinks, ice cream, sherbet and honeycomb. Carry out exciting chemical reactions such as fire writing, making bubbles, making slime, making bangs, louder bangs and very loud bangs! Plus learn the science of the Earth by building and erupting their own volcano, along with a trip to Smugglers Caves in Hastings to study the rocks and minerals in the caves and learn about the history of the caves.
Crime Scene Investigators
Crime scene investigation – you’ve seen it in TV and movies, but what does it really involve? Students choosing this project will gain skills to help them analyse evidence from a crime scene. This will include: chromatography, hair and fibre analysis, fingerprinting, blood splatter, chemical analysis, and print casting. There will be a day trip to Wildwood Trust in Herne Bay to have fun solving the problem of ‘Who Killed Mr Bunny?’. On the final day, students will work in CSI teams to solve another mystery – they will need all the skills they learnt to help them solve the crime and prove who is innocent and who is guilty.
