Year 7 September 2019 Welcome

Year 7 September 2019 Welcome

I am delighted to welcome your son/daughter to Wilmington Academy. I hope that you and your child have had an enjoyable and restful summer and that your child has not been too nervous about joining us this September.

At Wilmington Academy, we offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Key Stage 3. As a Wilmington Academy student, your child will be joining a community where they can flourish and succeed academically, socially and personally. Your child will be joining the academy at an exciting time, as we are proud to celebrate the success of this year’s Key Stage 4 results. A Parents’ Guide to MYP can be found following this link:  http://wilmingtonacademy.org.uk/curriculum-and-assessment/subject-information/myp-assessment-guidance-for-parents/

We have achieved the best ever results in the history of the academy for English Language and Literature with students achieving 79% 4-9 and 65% 5-9. 61% of students achieved a 4 or above in Mathematics, contributing to an improvement of 58% 4-9 English and

Mathematics combined score. Subject performances are strong throughout the academy and above the national average, demonstrating continuous improvement.

I know that the transition to secondary school can be quite an exciting adventure but also a daunting experience for some students and their families which is the reason why we will be running a two-day transition programme on Monday 2nd September and Tuesday 3rd September to ensure the transition to Wilmington Academy is as smooth and enjoyable as possible. The programme will include exciting learning activities to help your child understand the IB philosophy and what it means to be internationally-minded. Please can students arrive to school before 8:40am for registration. Students will need to bring a pencil case with the relevant equipment. They do not need to bring in their PE kits for the two days.

I have attached a Year 7 Parent and Student Guide to Wilmington Academy, which contains answers to most frequently asked questions.

May I take this opportunity to also introduce you to Miss Quan, Assistant Principal of Minerva College who will be overseeing the transition of Year 7s. Should you have any questions or concerns about your child, please can you contact your Child’s College Team:

School Telephone Number: 01322 272111

We look forward to working with you this year and together we will support your child in settling into Wilmington Academy and guide them through a successful year.
