At Wilmington Academy all students in year 7 and year 8 follow the key stage 3 National Curriculum for Design and Technology. The curriculum helps students to develop their creative and practical skills, alongside their technical knowledge to enable them to fully engage with the technological world around them. The programme of study for Key Stage 3 builds on Key Stage 2 to develop students as independent learners who are able to solve problems using their skills in design and technology.
Overview of Content
Year 7 and 8 students are assessed at the end of each module, through the project work they complete in lesson time and the independent learning tasks they carry out. A grade between 1-9 is assigned to represent the level of understanding a student has achieved in the topics they have covered.
What does this course involve at Key Stage 3?
Design and Technology at Key Stage 3 involves students working in each of the core three disciplines that we run at Key Stage 4 here at Wilmington.
Product Design, gives students the opportunity to complete projects working with woods and plastics.
Engineering allows students to produce their own finished work-pieces, working with metals including mild steel and aluminium.
Food, enables students to develop life skills, working with a range of ingredients to produce primarily savoury dishes that help to promote a healthy balanced diet.
The aim of this course is to ensure students are able to build a repertoire of knowledge, alongside practical skills that they can apply to skilfully design and make high quality prototypes or products for a wide range of users. Students will evaluate, test and assess their ideas and products as well as the work of others. All students will be given the opportunity to develop their understanding of nutrition and apply these principles as they learn how to cook.
What do you need to be successful in this course?
To be successful students need to develop their understanding, knowledge and application of the key four Design and Technology concepts as outlined below for each year. To achieve this, students need to experiment, take risks and be open to exploring new ideas, techniques and work with tools and equipment which they may be unfamiliar with.
Design – Use exploration and independent research to identify and understand the needs of the user. In some projects this will include the study of different cultures.
Develop, present and communicate design ideas using annotated sketches, detailed plans, three dimensional prototype modelling and computer aided design software.
Make – Select and use specialist tools from a range of different equipment, to effectively manufacture a variety of products to a high quality of finish. Working across a variety of techniques, processes, machinery and computer aided manufacture with accuracy.
Evaluate – Analyse the work of past and present professionals and others, including previous students, to develop a broader understanding of design and manufacture.
Test, evaluate and refine their ideas and products against a specification, taking into account the views of the intended user and other interested groups.
Technical knowledge – Understand and use the properties of materials and the performance of structural elements to achieve functional solutions.
Apply computing and use electronics to embed intelligence in products that respond to inputs using a light sensor for an L.E.D, safe and secure tea light.
Design – Use a variety of approaches, including user-centred design, to generate creative ideas and avoid generic stereotypical design solutions.
Students identify and solve their own design problems and understand how to reformulate problems given to them.
Students develop their own specifications to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that respond to different user’s needs through a range of products.
Make – Select from and use a wider range of materials including more complex materials, components and ingredients based on their specific properties.
Evaluate – Investigate new and emerging technologies and assess their suitability for use in different products and their impact on the overall design.
Understand developments in design and Technology, the impact on individuals, society and the environment. Develop a greater awareness of the responsibilities designers and engineers to consider the environmental impact of the products they produce.
Technical knowledge – Understand how more advanced mechanical systems are used in products to enable changes in movement and force.
Understand how more advanced electrical and electronic systems can be powered and used in their products with light as an input to generate the motor on their solar powered boats.
