What does this course involve at Key Stage 3?

Drama is a practical subject in which the students learn to develop the ability to devise, improvise and create credible characterisations. In year 7 and 8, students are taught a wide range of Drama skills across a number of projects incorporating both devised and scripted work. This subject will help improve pupil’s communication skills, co-operation skills and their confidence.

What do you need to be successful in this course?

Students will need to work confidently in different groups, using drama techniques to shape the performance. They will need to reflect on their work, suggest improvements and use correct drama terminology.

How will they be assessed?

At the end of every module pupils performances will be videoed which is then shared with the class, which will enable pupils to evaluate their own and other performances. Pupils will be able to reflect on the feedback given to them by their class teacher. Pupils will receive written feedback which will include areas for improvement as well as the overall grade which will be either 1,2,3 -Emerging 4,5,6 – Secure or  7,8,9 Advanced.

At the end of key stage 3 pupils will be assessed in three areas creating, performing and evaluation

Creating –Pupils should be able to create original performances using research and imagination. They should be able to use a variety of techniques appropriately as well as responding to issues and themes.

Performing –During a performance pupils will be able to sustain a character adapting voice, body language and facial expression in a subtle way. Pupils will be able to convey contrasting characters as well as having an understanding of theatrical effects.

Creating –Pupils will be able to recognise and use a range of drama vocabulary when evaluating and set appropriate targets as well as giving constructive feedback to others.

Year 7

Year 7 students follow units of work, which teach and develop key drama skills, such as mime, frozen tableau, narration, cross-cutting, and improvisation. They are taught how to develop vocal projection, range and expression, as well as learning spatial awareness and physical expression. Projects throughout the year range from Characterisation and Skills Development, to Scripted Performance and Short Film Making.

Year 8

Year 8 projects focus on further developing the skills learnt in Year 7, and enhancing the students’ experience of theatrical techniques and genres. They explore physical theatre, as well as surrealism and more abstract styles. Projects will allow students to experience Scripted Performance as well as devising, basing work on relevant and challenging themes and issues.

Years 9, 10 & 11

Performing Arts (Acting) BTEC Level 1/2 First Award

A BTEC First Certificate is a practical, work – related course. Students will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities.

You learn how to take on both performance and technical roles within the performing arts industry and present your work to a live invited audience. There is one element, which is completed under controlled conditions; this is a letter of application responding to an annually released theme.

A BTEC First Certificate is the equivalent to: One GCSE grade A*- C.

The qualification will be achieved over three years. The course is made up of three units:

Unit 1 – Individual Showcase

The externally assessed unit Learners will complete a letter of application and a presentation/audition in response to a selected progression opportunity. There will be a selection of four pre-released progression opportunities for each academic year. The assessment activity will take place under controlled conditions.

The Individual Showcase unit is externally assessed using a 2 hour controlled written assessment and recorded performance/presentation which will be sent off.

Unit 2 – Preparation, Performance and Production

Preparation, Performance and Production In this unit you will learn how to develop a performance piece as a member of a fictional performance company. You will take on a specific performing or production role and will prepare for, and produce, a performance by carrying out tasks that are appropriate to your role. No matter what role you undertake, you will also need to explore the performance piece you are working on. The performers and production team will need to work together to explore, develop and shape ideas for the performance.

You will need to take part in preparations for the performance that are appropriate to your role to ensure everything is ready for the opening night. This might include attending rehearsals, production meetings, making sessions and get-ins and fit-ups. All of your hard work will come to fruition when you present your performance to an audience.

Unit 3 – Acting Skills Core units will include: Individual Showcase

Optional Specialist Unit they will cover: Acting Skills This unit is about starting you on your journey to becoming a professional actor. You will be introduced to important acting skills and will learn about the specific demands that acting makes on the body and mind. In particular, you will undertake a programme of regular exercises to help you master the techniques that will enable you to control and use your voice and body to communicate a character or role. As well as physical skills, you will need to use your imagination to create characters or roles.

The course includes both practical and written elements in lessons, which will be supported through homework. The course is mainly assignment based with 66% of the marks being awarded through completion of teacher-assessed assignments.

Progression after completion of the course could involve students going on to study either A Levels or BTEC Level 3, or further training in the Performing Arts Industry.

Year 12 & Year 13

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts aims to provide a

broad educational base for further training, further education and employment within the performing arts sector. The qualification will develop learners’ abilities through the knowledge and skills gained in different parts of the programme.

The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Performing Arts is a 60-credit and 360-guided-learning hour (GLH) qualification.

Students will complete the following units:

Year 12

Unit 1 Investigating Practitioners work

You will complete a piece of extended writing (3 hours) under controlled conditions. The test will be based on your knowledge on two Theatre practitioners showing an understanding of the contextual factors of their work.

Unit 2 Developing Skills for a live Performance

You will perform in two performances in two contrasting styles. During the process you will show evidence of how your acting skills have improved over time.

Year 13

Unit 3 Group Performance work

You will respond to a brief and develop a performance to an intended audience. Your group will create a performance between 10-20 minutes.

Unit 19 Acting Styles

You will develop your acting styles and will apply this during the rehearsal process in preparation for a live performance.

Student’s work will be marked internally and will be externally moderated. Worked is marked at four levels, pass, merit, distinction and distinction*
