What does this course involve at Key Stage 3?
Music is a practical subject in which students work as musicians, engaging in musical thinking. Three kinds of activity require musical thinking: listening, composing and performing. These elements provide the foundation for the music curriculum.
What do you need to be successful in this course?
Music is a universal language which can be enjoyed by all and accessible to all. Students should have the experience of music which encompasses a wide range of styles and cultural traditions.

Year 9, 10 & 11
Music Edexcel BTEC Level 2 First Award in Music
Music is a constant in many of our lives and is quite extraordinary in its ability to connect us to each other and to ourselves. It is also extremely enjoyable and a great outlet for expression, creativity and imagination. It also has a variety of other benefits such as increasing academic achievement, relieving stress and anxiety, teaching discipline and improving motor skills.
The BTEC course is taught in a highly practical way with an emphasis on performance, composition and ensemble work. This allows students to work together to develop as musicians and as collaborative learners. The coursework portion within the units is used to develop reflective practice.
Unit Description Assessment
Unit 1: The Music Industry Looking at how the music industry operates from the many different roles available to the companies and organisations involved in producing the development of musicians. 1hr Exam
Unit 2: Managing a Music Product Creating and producing an album or concert. They will be planned, developed and delivered by students, with a focus on promotion of their final product. Coursework and Observation
Unit 4: Introducing Music Composition Creating four pieces of music based on four different briefs. Two of these are extended, with one of these made into a full, final piece of music. Coursework
Unit 5: Introducing Music Performance Forming bands and ensembles to produce two performances; one song based and one instrumental based. Performance, Coursework and Observation.
Please consider the performance aspect of this course when making a decision. You will be performing several times over the three years and must be committed to this.
Years 12 & I3
In Year 12, students can continue to study music as a specialist subject. If they choose this then they will study the Edexcel BTEC National Subsidiary Diploma in Music which will run over two years. Within this course they will complete six units:

Unit 23: Music Performance Techniques This unit focuses on two areas: firstly the ability to play or sing with fluency, dexterity and the authority of a seasoned performer, and secondly arriving at that point through a logical and structured practice routine. Tone production, timing and rhythmic control are fundamental to this unit. Coursework, Performance and Observation
Unit 40: Working and Developing as a Musical Ensemble This practical unit explores the nature of ensemble work by allowing learners to become part of a musical ensemble concentrating on the process of working together to produce a musically and artistically satisfying result. Coursework, Performance and Observation Unit 21: Music in the Community This unit examines the phenomenon of community music-making. It looks at the rationale for taking music into the community and the social and cultural benefits for doing so. At its heart is practical application and an exploration of what it means to be a ‘community musician’. These musicians see the power of musical creation and performance and are part of a movement to make this experience open to more people. Coursework and Observation.
Unit 24: Music Project This unit is concerned with all the roles involved in putting on a successful live performance. From the marketing manager to the stage manager, from the composers to the performers, all roles are equally as important. Unit 30: Pop Music in Practice World This unit is designed to enable learners to expand their knowledge of pop music grounded in practical experience of rehearsing and performing relevant works. Learners will know different styles and genres of pop music and how pop music has developed through different eras. Learners will then be able to perform their own compositions and works of others relative to the styles and genres studied.
Unit 23: Music Performance Session Styles The ability to fulfil the role of session musician in recording and live situations requires the performer to have a wide palette of skills that can be applied in variety of situations, often with little or no rehearsal. In order to do this successfully they must first gain an understanding of the stylistic elements that comprise a wide range of genres.
This course is highly practical and vocational, combining musical learning with reflective practice. Due to practical nature of the course, written homework is not always appropriate. Because of this, students will be expected to complete various different types of homework. This will range from written coursework tasks, taking part in outside class rehearsals, taking on a responsibility within the music department and attending extracurricular clubs.
