Year 9, 10 and 11

Students, who choose to study GCSE Product Design as an option at Key Stage four, will learn about how everyday products are designed and the different factors that influence their development and production.  During the course, students will complete a range of design and manufacture projects to prepare them for the final practical controlled assessment that they will begin in year 11. The examination board externally sets this project and the assessment makes up 60% of the final GCSE grade.  At the end of year 11 students sit a written GCSE examination that is worth 40% of the final grade.

Candidates should undertake a single design and make activity, which is selected from a range of AQA-set tasks. The tasks are reviewed every two years. Candidates should submit a 3-dimensional outcome and a concise design folder with appropriate ICT evidence. The design folder should consist of approximately 20 pages of A3 paper or the ICT equivalent. It is expected that candidates should spend approximately 45 hours on this activity.

All candidates should provide photographic evidence of the finished outcome and it is strongly recommended that photographic evidence at various stages of making is submitted.

How you will be assessed?

  •     A single written examination paper, two hours in duration.  The exam is worth 40% of the final overall grade
  •     A coursework portfolio, recording each stage of the process in the design and manufacture of a specified     product.  The coursework is worth 60% of the final overall grade

Year 12

AQA – Product Design AS/A2

We follow the AQA AS/A2 specification here at Wilmington. Students will complete two projects, or a portfolio of projects, where they research, design, make, test and evaluate their work, as well as potential for branding and advertising consideration. Students will solve real-world problems through innovative design solutions and will also look at iconic designs and designers, to inspire and guide their products, as well as analysing any existing product that shows success in its design. The course aims to build upon existing GCSE knowledge, to produce high quality products and have a strong knowledge of Product Design theory, preparing students for a potential career in Product Design. This course leads effectively into University degree courses or Apprenticeship schemes in the Product Design sector.

Entry Requirements

Students must achieve 5 A*-C grades at GCSE. We are asking for an A or B on any prior GCSE Product Design course or Merit and above for any other relevant BTEC course

We require students to have a C in English and Maths, preferably with a B in Product Design or other related art/design course.

 Overview of Assessment

The course is assessed in the June examinations.

Students in the AS course will sit one 2-hour written exam.

Students in the A2 course will sit one 2-hour written exam.

All assessment units are weighted at 50%, PROD1 and PROD2 make up 100% of AS and PROD3 and PROD4 make up 100% of A2.
