Our first “Careers In…” talks of this academic year kicked off with students finding more out about careers within the Sports Industry. Year 11 and Post 16 students participated in two separate virtual sessions delivered by Andy Speed from the University Campus of Football Business, based in Wembley and Manchester.
Some 450,000 people in the UK are employed within the wider sports industry which is 25% of all of those working in the industry across Europe. 40% of those working in the sector in the UK have completed tertiary education such as University. Students learnt that working within the Sports Industry can take different forms: from being a professional athlete to working in sales, marketing, physical and mental development, social media, law, or even as a commentator!
When asked about the types of skills and work experience that young people need to enter this sector, Andy’s answer was that it is all about people and people skills; Communication skills are important as is being able to prove aptitude and the ability to diversify. Experience was also key! He advised that students should perhaps have an interest in more than one sport and perhaps at different levels and areas. An example of this might be an interest in management for one sport and equipment for another.
A huge thank you to Andy and UCFB for a highly informative presentation.
