eSports Racing Team Success

On Wednesday I had the pleasure of taking three Y12 students George, Borislav and Jack to the National LAN Sim Racing finals at Williams F1 HQ in Wantage, Oxford.

The team had qualified in the top bracket nationally meaning that we went to the finals as one of the top 20 centres in the UK. These centres included universities, colleges and one other school. At this point it is fair to say that these other colleges have a much bigger outlay on equipment and space, and some are even already supported by Williams F1 with racing equipment and coaching from the professional team.

Going into the final two races of the season, we were sitting top of the league table for the constructors (Teams) championship and in second place (George) for the best driver. The prize for the winning driver this year was an all-expenses-paid trip to Atlanta in America to race real racing cars and compete to become a professional driver. Unfortunately for George he came second in the championship after coming in 3rd place in the last race, meaning he lost by 8 points to the winner from Loughborough College (A team who are supported by Williams).

However, we did win first place in the Teams league meaning that we are officially the BEST Sim racing school in the UK. This achievement should not be overlooked and all credit must go to the boys who outside of their studies have put in time and effort to represent Wilmington Academy.

It is a great way for me to leave Wilmington Esports, and I hope that we continue to push boundaries and offer experiences such as this to our pupils moving forward.
