Dear Parent/Carer

Year 12 – Important Information

Please find below important information in relation to your son/daughter’s current courses:

Mock Assessments

As a reminder, Year 12 students studying an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma qualification (not including the IB Careers-related Core) will undertake mock examinations during module 6.  Mock examinations will take place between Monday 19 June 2023 and Friday 23 June 2023 and will be conducted under full examination conditions.  Mock timetables are available via MCAS and a copy will be provided to all students.  A link to the whole mock assessment schedule for Year 12 can be found via this link.

To support parents/carers further, key information including schedules for the upcoming Summer examinations can be found on the Academy website via this link.   I have also attached Kooth’s ‘Guide to Coping with Exam Stress’ which provides practical hints and tips to support your son/daughter over the course of the next few modules.

Collaborative Project Learning and the IB Group 4 Project

In the “real world”, subjects do not exist independently.  Disciplines work together to solve problems and build the world around us.  For example, a new hospital needs funding (probably from the government), an architect to build it, medical personnel to consult on function, geographers to choose a site, maths and engineering for construction, art and design for interiors and landscaping, etc.

On Thursday 29 June – Friday 30 June, all Year 12 will participate in two cross-curricular applied learning days or the Group 4 Project.  This is an opportunity for students to develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills as they learn about an ethical issue or real-life application related to their field of study.  Most importantly, this learning experience will allow students to develop their understanding of how different disciplines work together to solve problems and make the world a better place.

Work Experience

From Monday 3 July 2023 until Friday 14 July 2023 Year 12 will be on Work Experience.  The aim of this period is to provide students with knowledge and understanding of an industry which they are interested in pursuing as a future career.  There are still a few students who have yet to secure a work experience placement for this duration.  Should your son/daughter need assistance in securing a placement, please do not hesitate to let us know; we have numerous placement vacancies available.  Contact post16@wilmingtonacademy.org.uk

Futures Week

On their return from Work Experience, Year 12 will participate in a weeks long bespoke programme designed to get them ready for life after Post 16; sessions will include UCAS and Apprenticeship application support, mock interviews, and an opportunity to engage with a variety of local and national employers.  The week will also include an end-of-year celebratory trip, which sees the whole year group and college staff come together to celebrate the achievements of this academic year.  More information will follow via a separate communication home.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a lovely half term break and look forward to seeing you on the first day of Module 6: Monday 5 June 2023 at 8:40 am.

Yours faithfully
Miss L Evans | Assistant Principal – Head of Post 16
